My recent series of sculptures consist of animal skulls woven with pearls, beads, and other materials intended to add whimsy and personality to the beautiful surfaces of the skulls. The designs accentuate some of the best features of the raw material, calling attention to fissures that look like a winding riverbed, angular planes simulating glacier-carved rock, and cavernous eye openings. Animal heads are usually throw-away items, but repurposing the skulls into art turns them into precious objects. I want to honor the spirit of the animal; I hope the viewer will have fun and respond with a sense of humor or intrigue.
